Course Description
|
Introduction to fluid mechanics laboratory and design of experiments including measurements of fluid properties, definition of hydrostatic pressure, flow in a Venturi tube, pressure measurements in pipe flows, head loss measurements, parallel and series pump systems and impact of a jet. Additionally, a basic course is given for coding in MATLAB and the students are required to model simple fluid flow problems by using MATLAB.
|
Course Objectives
|
1. To learn the main measurement methods utilized in fluid mechanics problems,
2.To understand and realize the theoretical concepts of fluid mechanics experimentally,
3. To learn how to write a technical report of an experiment
4. To experience coding in MATLAB for the applications of fluid mechanics,
5. To introduce the concept of dimensional analysis and its applications,
6. Designing and producing an engineering application by using basic fluid mechanics knowledge.
|
Course Learning Outcomes
|
At the end of this course, students will have a complete understanding of the following fundamental topics in engineering:
I. Learning the basic rules and concepts in experimental studies,
II. Solving hydrostatics problem involving vertical, inclined, and curved walls,
III. Using MATLAB for fluid mechanics problems,
IV. Experimental implementation of pipe-flow problems with head losses,
V. Experimental implementation of impact of a jet problem
VI. Working and manufacturing on a real engineering design problem
