Course Description

ENG 102  is an integrated academic English course that aims to develop competence in academic skills. It aims to extend students' competence and confidence in research and giving presentations in an academic context related to maritime topics , so as to enable students to participate effectively in academic situations. The course focuses on being aware of research skills including reading, note taking strategies, paraphrasing, and summarizing, outlining and evaluating resources. It also focuses on communicative competence in academic contexts by developing discussion strategies to participate in group discussions as well as developing library skills and presentation skills. On successful completion of this course, the students are expected to be competent and confident about conducting a future research on maritime related topics  by themselves in their academic and business life.

  • Students construct knowledge from gathering information from a variety of resources, constructing knowledge involves analysis and synthesis; these processes involve critical thinking.
  • Students present a clear, detailed talk related to own interest, explain a point of view on a topical issue (focused from the overall learning); organize and develop ideas effectively and logically in presentations.
