Introduction and Basic Concepts / Applications of Equations and Inequalities / Graphs / Systems of Equations / Exponential and Logarithmic Functions / Applications: Math. Finance / Limits / Continuity / Differentiation

 

Course Objectives

 

This course together with its follow up will be an extensive introduction to the differentiation and integral calculus. Topics covered here will provide you with the required mathematical foundation on which you will have the chance to master your skills in your own major fields. The quantitative side of Social Sciences becomes more and more demanding and involving so that the abilities required for a competitive set of skills goes through a profound mathematical background.

 

Course Learning Outcomes

 

By students who passed from EF114 Mathematics I successfully

Students will be able to

  1. Apply equations to various practical situations.
  2. Introduce constant functions, functions, rational functions, case-defined functions, the absolute-value function, and factorial notation.
  3. Develop the notion of slope and different forms of equations of lines and sketch parabolas arising from quadratic functions.
  4. Extend the notion of compound interest to include effective rates and to solve interest problems whose solutions require logarithms.
  5. Apply limits and their basic properties in different types of problems
  6. Apply sketch a tangent line to a curve, to define the slope of a curve, and to define a derivative and give it a geometric interpretation.
  7. Apply the basic rules for differentiating constant functions, a multiplication/division of two functions and power functions
