Course Description

Main aim of this course is to provide essential information for conducting a research by adhering to the appropriate methodology and presenting the outcome of the research in written format. The course also aims to provide the students with basic oral presentation techniques.

The course is designed for senior year students as a prerequisite to “Design Project Course (MF 428)” in which they are expected to write graduation project. The course presents a brief overview of the research methodology. Basic knowledge on plagiarism, research design, defining a research problem and hypotheses, research techniques, citation and referencing systems. Qualitative and quantitative approaches are also covered within the course.  Due to corona virus pandemic, course is planned as distance learning, synchronous online lectures and sessions are recorded for further reference.

Course Objectives

1. to teach definition and types of plagiarism,

2. to provide methods to avoid plagiarism,

3. to describe definition of academic paper and scientific research,

4. to give basics of written presentation,

5. to teach  how to design a research, define variables, data collection and data process,

6. to teach approaches for formulating the  research question,

7. to teach how the hypotheses in a research are formulated,

8. to discuss research process and criteria of quality research,

9. to provide knowledge on designing a research,

10. to teach citation and referencing methods,

11. to teach and practice oral presentation techniques

Course Learning Outcomes

Students who pass the course will:

I. have a better understanding of what  plagiarism is and how to avoid it,

II. be able to understand what academic paper, research and written presentation  techniques are,

III. be able to formulate research question and follow necessary steps to design a scientific research according to the research title,

IV. be able to write appropriate hypotheses, choose and use a citation and referencing system as required,

V. be able to design outline of a small scale research on a selected topic and orally present the results in front of an audience.

Instructional Methods and Techniques

Lecture will be conducted online in one-hour sessions for 14 weeks via MSTeams Platform and PRU  Student Information System. After covering the essential information on scientific research and academic writing, students will be given assignments to improve their research skills. This way it will be made sure that the students have digested the basics of research and are able to discuss research related procedures. In-class discussions will be held to enhance the understanding of students on the subject matter through selected research papers. Students will be requested to prepare examples of selected topics covered throughout the course and will be asked to present them both in written and oral format. Midterm grades (60%) will be formed by in-class practices/assignments and presentation of a small-scale research design prepared in groups.

At the beginning of the course, students will also be asked to choose their research topics that they want to study in the coming semester within MF428 (Design Project) course and start counseling with their assigned/chosen advisors. For successful completion of the course the students will prepare a brief proposal of research topic to include envisaged Abstract, Introduction and Literature review sections. Final exam mark (40%) will be granted by the assigned advisers for their FINAL TERM PAPERS that they submit in groups.
