Course Description

Scientific research, philosophy of science, ethics in research; the importance of research in doctorate thesis and academic articles, research methods and basic concepts; literature review; qualitative research methods, content analysis, focus group discussion; projective techniques and in-depth interview techniques as qualitative research methods; presentations of group work on qualitative research methods; questionnaires and experiments as quantitative research methods; using the questionnaire, preparing the questionnaire; calculation of scales and scale reliability; defining descriptive statistics and hypothesis; nonparametric hypothesis tests, group differences tests (t-test variants -Anova); factor analysis; reliability and validity testing; correlation analysis - regression analysis.

Course Objectives

This advanced research methods course provides a PhD-level introduction to the conduct of social scientific inquiry. The goal is to have students understand how to design scientific research, collect both qualitative and quantitative data, assess validity and reliability and apply parametric tests, nonparametric tests, factor analysis and regression analysis.

Course Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, students can;

  1. Make literature review and design a research model
  2. Formulate research questions and design appropriate research.
  3. Develop hypotheses.
  4. Identify appropriate sampling method and the sample size for the study.
  5. Collect data using a variety of methods.
  6. Analyze both advanced qualitative and quantitative data using statistical programs.
  7. Report findings and develop scientific implications.
