Course Description

This course forms part of the proposed Modular Framework for vocational and professional qualifications based on a Associate's Degree program in Electronics and Automation Department, as being the part of Mechatronics. With this course basics information, maritime communication terminologies and the used system together with respective equipments of Maritime Communications will be introduced.

  1. Basics and terminologies used in Ships Maritime Communication Systems
  2. Maintenance, control and test of the above mentioned systems
  3. Operation principles and techniques used for the respective hardware
  4. Internal and external communication system components on board,
  5. Communication in emergency, search and rescue situations and the used components of systems such as, GMDSS, VHF-HF-MF-DSC, NAVTEX, EPİRB SART s etc.......

 

Course Objectives

 

This course comprises the function of Electrical, electronic and control engineering at the operational level. On successful completion of the training and assessment trainees should be competent to carry out safely the electro-technical officer duties on board the ships.

The syllabus for for this course covers the the relevant requirements namely:

International maritime Communication Rules, GMDSS (Global Maritime Distress and Safety System), functioning, regulations, emergency communications, ship internal communication systems (automated phone system, the SP system, PA system) and internal communication systems. Finally repair and maintenance functions of all external and internal communication system on board the ship will be introduced

 

Course Learning Outcomes

 

To provide the background knowledge and practical work to support:

  1. Concepts related to maritime communication in general and basic terms
  2.  GMDSS System and The Maritime Mobile Service İmplementations.
  3. Use of routine communication systems and procedures as being the content of the GMDSS, Internal/External Maritime Comm.
  4. GMDSS Distress communication procedures
  5. GMDSS equipment repair and maintenance procedures,
  6. Ship’s internal ,external communication systems operations.
  7. Ship internal, external  communication system equipments repair and maintenance
