Basic Aspects of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology; Characterization methods: Microscopy and Spectroscopy; Nanofabrication vs Nano-manufacturing: Top-down and Bottom-up Techniques; Surfaces at the Nanoscale: Catalysis; Carbon nanostructures: Structure, Properties, Fabrication and Applications; Polymers and Liquid Crystals; Nano biotechnology: DNA Structure, Basics of Biotechnology, Applications of DNA nanotechnology; Quantum dots: Theory and Applications; Nanocomposites: Theory, Properties and Applications; Nanotechnology and Biomimicry; Environmental Issues, Safety and Ethics in Nanotechnology

 

Course Objectives

 

To introduce the fundamental concepts of nanoscience and nanotechnology and to investigate applications in different fields of engineering

 

Course Learning Outcomes

 

Upon successful completion of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology course, students should be able to:

1.Describe the main concepts and applications of nanoscience and nanotechnology

2.Compare different characterization methods

3.Distinguish between the types and applicability of the manufacturing  techniques

4.Integrate nanotechnology concepts into the needs of marine technology and other fields of engineering

5.Evaluate environmental issues and ethics problems related to nanotechnology

6.Use scientific literature and online databases for assignments

7.Present scientific papers
