Course Description
|
This course forms part of the proposed Modular Framework for vocational and professional qualification based on a degree programme in Navigation Engineering. The Programme gives students an in-depth expertise of managing a merchant vessel as a Deck Officer and ultimately as the captain of the vessel. The emphasis is upon Classification, Instruments and procedures of Maritime Communications and use signaling methods to transmit and receive information.
in accordance with the International Procedures, concerning any merchant ships in port or navigation, under normal or emergency conditions.

Course Objectives
|
1. To introduce students to classification of Maritime Communications.
2. To introduce students to Morse, Code Flags and semaphore signaling procedures.
3. To introduce students to the phonetic alphabet; encoding and decoding messages; procedures as defined in the international code of signals.
4. To introduce students to International Maritime Organization (IMO) standard marine communication phrases (SMCP).
5. To introduce students to basic signaling methods to transmit and receive information.
6. To provide students familiarization with; how to follow contingency plans in the event of emergencies and how to respond to distress signals.
7. To provide students exercise opportunity concerning use of basic signaling methods to transmit and receive information.

Home works, based on; learning Morse/Phonetic Alphabet, Identify Flags/Pennants, encoding/decoding messages, SMCP, and emergency respond communications procedures will be assigned. Assignments will be graded unless there are major errors or omissions and it is returned for correction or completion. Assignments with minor detail or other non-conceptual errors will be graded as submitted.

Practical exercises concerning basic use of signaling methods to transmit and receive information will be made on the ship mast and in the classroom to support lectures.
