Course Description

This course enables the cadets to gain proficiency in using IMO Standard Marine Communication Phrases (SMCP). In addition, it aims to develop their skills to understand and use basic engine commands, report incidents and apply terminology related to safety considerations, emergencies on board a ship and in engine room.

 

Course Objectives

 

 Students who successfully pass the course will acquire knowledge and skills required for understanding and using standardized Maritime communication phrases, emergency voice communication phrases, fire-fighting equipment and LSA terminology and inspection related communication. Main objectives are:

1.            To teach general usage of IMO SMCP

2.            To teach external communication phrases (A-1)

3.            To teach onboard communication phrases (A-2)

4.            To teach phrases related to operative ship handling (B-1) (Deck only)

5.            To teach standard phrases used for safety  on board (B-2)

6.            To teach firefighting terminology and fire related communication.

7.            To teach standard phrases for cargo handling ( B-3 Selected parts)

8.            To teach LSA terminology and inspection communication

9.            To teach standard phrases for evacuation operations. (B-4 selected parts only)

 

Course Learning Outcomes

 

Students who successfully pass the course will acquire the use of SMCP. They will be acquainted with the usage of basic phrases of marine English used in routine and emergency cases.  Students will be able to :

1.            use and understand the IMO SMCP book as a whole

2.            understand and use communication procedures ( position, course speed etc)

3.            use and execute  standard wheel and engine orders

4.            understand prepare verbal distress communication

5.            perform external communications  (including VTS – PILOT comms.)

6.            use fire-fighting and LSA terminology and do related communication

7.            identify  Turkish VTS areas and required communication routine

8.            execute and hand over watch keeping using standard phrases

9.            communicate onboard  safety issues of various kinds
