Course Description

This course enables the cadets to gain proficiency in using IMO Standard Marine Communication Phrases (SMCP). In addition, it aims to develop their skills to understand and use basic engine commands, report incidents and apply terminology related to safety considerations, emergencies on board a ship and in engine room.

 

Course Objectives

 

Students who successfully pass the course will acquire knowledge and skills required for understanding and using standardized English on board a ship in cases of routine and emergency.

 

Course Learning Outcomes

 

In English, he or she:

1. Understands and uses standard engine orders.

2. Briefs on propulsion systems, main engine and auxiliary equipment.

3. Briefs on engine room operations, events and stability.

4. Records events in brief and  in written form.

5. Understands the terminology on life saving appliances.

6. Expresses issues concerning safety on board.

7. Expresses issues concerning occupational safety.

8. Gains efficient terminology on fire protection and fire fighting.

9. Gains efficient discourse on damage control.
