Course Description

Introduction to Material Science. Atomic structure and bonding, structure of solids, defects and imperfections, rate processes and crystallization, phase transformations and equilibria, mechanical properties, corrosive  properties, metals, ceramics, polymers and composites.

Course Objectives

1. To introduce the basic principles of materials science for an understanding of the relations among the processing, structure, and properties of engineering materials.

2. To prepare students for identify the basic classes of engineering materials, have knowledge of material properties and choosing  the right material for the job,

3. To introduce the processing and design limitations associated with each class of materials,

4. To acquaint students to realize new design opportunities with materials.

Course Learning Outcomes

Up on the successful completion of the ENG 224 "Materials Science” course students will be able to;

  1. Comprehend the interrelations among the processing, structure, properties and applications of the engineering materials which are involved in the design, production and selection of themselves.
  2. Implementation of the phase diagrams of metals and alloys.
  3. Describe the applications and processing of metals and alloys.
  4. Evaluate the performance criteria of materials for the required applications.
  5. Discuss materials suitable for marine engineering applications.
  6. Describe the characteristics of the different material types such as metals, alloys, ceramics, polymers and composites.

Homework & Projects

♦  Homework will be assigned in almost every week and then collected the next week at the beginning of the lecture.              (You will receive approximately 50% credit for turning in a complete set of solutions. Remaining 50% depends on how well you do.  Late homeworks are not accepted.)

♦  There will be one term paper, the subject of which will be determined by the instructor. It will be performed by groups of two or three students.

Laboratory Work

Laboratory Work (Tensıon Test, Impact test & Hardness Measurement) will Be Performed In 7th Week.
