Course Description

This course is aims to provide knowledge on the personnel management for the officers who will become later masters/engineers to improve their management skills on board the merchant ships and vessels. As a part of these studies it is stressed on the application of leadership and management principals on ship management.   

 

Course Objectives

 

1. To introduce knowledge on the ship management and training methods, principles and applications on board (Good conduct with subordinates, control of subordinates, attitudes of the crew, practice of the authority, group attitudes, employment, training methods, musters, drills and training) in the light of the general management and leadership practice and principles.

2. To introduce international and national acquis related to the ship management practice (STCW, ISM Code, Seafarers Regulation, Ship Manning Regulation, Maritime Labor Convention, Education and Examination Instruction) and explain applications..

3. To provide information on conduct of assigned duties and arrangement of work load on board (Planning, and coordination, assignment of jobs, Use of time and assets, prioritization).

4. To provide information on Source Management Practice (Source Allocation and Prioritization, Effective communications, Decision making, Leadership, Self-confidence, Motivation, Awareness) and reinforce their skills on this area.

5. To introduce the decision making process and techniques (Situation and risk assessment, definition of the options, Evaluation of the possible Course of Actions) and  reinforce these knowledge with an application.

Students passing the course successfully will acquire knowledge and skills as listed below;

I. General management and leadership principles and applications of these principles on board.

II. Understand international and national acquis and systems related to seafarers.

III. Application of the methods for planning and conduct of the  duties.

IV. Application of the Source Management methods.

V. Application of the Decision Making techniques.
