Course Objectives

The objective is to provide the students with the following scope of Maritime English themes seeking fluency in their command in Maritime English both in verbal and written terms.
1. Safety at Sea and Fire Fighting Equipment,
2. Terms Used in Navigational Charts and Publications,
3. Meteorology,
4. Maritime Trade and Shipping, Maritime Operations and Maritime Law,
5. Maintenance, Malfunctions and Docking including Class Surveys,
6. Terms Used in International Security System for Ports and Ships.

Course Learning Outcomes
|
Students who successfully pass the course will acquire Maritime English proficiency and skills as listed below.
1. Safety Equipment, Life Saving Appliances, Life Raft and Life Boat Equipment, Fire and Safety, Fire Fighting Equipment,
2. Abbreviations and symbols used in navigational charts and publications, geographical definitions, coastal and natural features, lights, beacons, areas and obstructions,
3. Meteorology and Meteorological records on Ship’s Logbook, terminology, weather reports and notices, recording sea state and weather in the Ship’s Logbook,
4. Written communications, documents and certificates pertaining to Maritime Trade and Shipping, port documents, logbook and other records, Sea Protest and other pertinent letters within the context of Ship Operations and Maritime Law,
5. Maintenance, malfunctions and docking including preparations for surveys, survey types, damage assessment and repairs, related correspondence and records, preparing the ship for docking, docking plans,
6. The framework of the International Code for the Security of Ships and of Port Facilities (ISPS) and terms used in the system.
